Álvaro Fernández Armero (Madrid-1969)
Director and screenwriter, Alvaro Fernandez Armero debuted in 1992 with the Goya-winning short film El Columpio.
The beginning of Fernández Armero in the direction with the short film “El columpio” suddenly launched his career. Played by two actors, almost unknown, Ariadna Gil and Coque Malla, the film is shot in a single location, the Madrid Subway. The voice-overs of the characters and their furtive glances, gets in 9 minutes to build a story with which anyone could be identified: the mysterious attraction to a stranger on the subway platform.
In 1993 he won the Spanish Goya Award for best short fiction with El Columpio.
After this, Fernandez Armero retakes comedy with “Todo es mentira “ and retells his fetish actors, Coque Malla, this time accompanied by Penelope Cruz. In the cast were some of the most important promises of Spanish cinema, as well as the protagonists, Ariadna Gil, Jordi Molla, Gustavo Salmeron, among others.
In 1994, is nominated for the Goya for Best New Director for “Todo es mentira” (“Everything is a lie”)
In his next film, Witches (1996), Álvaro Fernández Armero counts on Penelope Cruz, accompanied by Ana Alvarez, Neus Asensi and Beatriz Carvajal.
Two years later Coque Malla plays the protagonist in the film “Nada en la nevera”, with an almost newcomer María Esteve, forming one of the most comical and endearing couple of Spanish cinema.
In 2000, Fernández Armero reunites national young stars in “The Art of Dying”, a record that moves away from comedy to explore the world of suspense. This time the script is signed by Curro Royo and Juan Vicente Pozuelo. With this film gets the Silver Grand Prix International Festival of Fantastic Film Brussels. In the lead roles, are prominent names as Mary Esteve, Fele Martinez, Lucia Jimenez, Elsa Pataky, Adria Collado and Gustavo Salmeron .
With the film “The Art of Dying” won the Grand Prix Silver in the International Fantasy Film Festival in Brussels.
With “El juego de la verdad” (2004), script written with the director and screenwriter Roberto Santiago, Alvaro Fernandez Armero retrieves the romantic comedy, accompanied by Tristan Ulloa, Natalia Verbeke, Maria Esteve and Oscar Jaenada.
Before directing “ Salir pitando“, made the documentary “Angel Nieto: 12 +1”, based on the life of the Spanish rider winner of 13 world titles.
